Public-Park Based Tennis for Everyone-Open, Inclusive, Diverse and Public
HPTA
has always hosted its play at the public Highland Road Park, part of the Baton Rouge Recreation and Parks (BREC) system.
Today, HPTA boasts a membership roster of about 200 players from 2.5 to 4.0 and from ages 18 to 89. Every Saturday,
about 90 players converge on up to 12 courts at Highland Road Park where the play is fun and constant from 8 AM until noon.
Men also play on Tuesday and Thursday nights. HPTA members pay only $15 a year to belong, although membership is not
required to play. Free donuts are provided every Saturday and there is a free King Cake day at Mardi Gras and free Po-Boys
and play on membership day. It’s the open, inclusive and welcoming spirit and people of HPTA that
make the experience what the USTA has sought so strongly to promote across the nation through its community and league tennis
efforts. In fact, many players join league teams through contacts made at HPTA.
